- CHAPTER 10 GENERATING PRINTED FORMS
-
-
- INTRODUCTION...
-
- As you would expect, GIM provides the ability to print your
- folder data in a number of reporting formats. GIM's printed
- forms include a pedigree chart, two varieties of family group
- record forms, an ancestral table and a descendency table.
- Each of these forms is highly customizable.
-
- This chapter will discuss these forms in detail.
-
- This chapter is divided into five sections. This first
- section will discuss items that are common to all of the
- forms, such as printer support and submission information.
- The remaining sections will discuss each form in turn, as
- follows:
-
- ORGANIZATION OF THIS CHAPTER...
-
- PART A: The Pedigree Charts
- PART B: The Family Record
- PART C: The LDS Family Group Record
- PART D: The LDS Preprinted Family Group Record
- PART E: The Ancestral and Descendency Tables
-
- Each of these parts is contained in its own file. For
- example, Part C is contained in the file "gim10c.doc".
-
- THE REST OF THIS SECTION...
-
- This section contains some introductory material for the rest
- of the chapter. More or less in this order, we will answer
- the following questions:
-
- Does GIM support my printer?
-
- How do I set form length, margins, and fonts for my forms?
-
- What is submission info, and how does GIM use it?
-
- Why aren't there any more than five forms?
-
- DOES GIM SUPPORT MY PRINTER?
-
- If you haven't already selected a printer (and a print
- device) from the Setup Area, please do so now. Refer to
- chapter 6, entitled "Setting Things Up", for details.
-
- In that chapter, you'll learn about GIM's printer resource
- file, called GIMPRN.GIM, and you'll learn about the mechanism
- that GIM uses in an effort to make it possible for GIM to
- support every possible printer.
-
- If you find that your printer isn't listed in GIM's printer
- resource file, please contact the GIM Authors immediately, so
- that we can add your printer to the resource file.
-
- PRINTER SETTINGS...
-
- HOW DO I SET FORM LENGTH, MARGINS, AND FONTS FOR MY FORMS?
-
- TYPESETTING: Basics
-
- To get to the Typesetting menu, enter the Forms Area by
- pressing F3 from the Multi Area, and then press
- Shift-F2.
-
- The Typesetting Menu provides all of the settings for
- margins, fonts, and numbers of copies for both the
- Pedigree Chart and the Family Group Record form.
-
- TYPESETTING: Friction or Tractor Feed
-
- "Friction Feed" printing refers to printing on single
- sheets of paper. "Tractor Feed" printing refers to the
- type of computer paper that comes in a large stack of
- continuous sheets that can be separated from each other
- at the perforations between them.
-
- Select the kind of printing your printer supports. If
- it supports both, select the kind of printing you
- prefer.
-
- TYPESETTING: Single or Double Sided Printing
-
- If you selected Tractor Feed printing, you can only
- select single sided printing. If you selected Friction
- Feed, you can select either single or double sided
- printing.
-
- TYPESETTING: Fonts
-
- The fonts are defined in GIM's printer resource file,
- which is called GIMPRN.GIM. The typesetting menu will
- display each of the defined fonts, letting you choose
- the one you like.
-
- TYPESETTING: Copy Count
-
- Most of the time, you will want to print out a single
- copy of each form. If you choose, you can print as many
- copies as you like by adjusting the copy count. Select
- "A" to increase the copy count, or "a" to decrease it.
-
- TYPESETTING: Left Margin Front Side
- Left Margin Back Side
-
- These margins are in inches. Increase them by pressing
- "B" or "C", and decrease them by pressing "b" or "c".
-
- Note that these margins apply to the Pedigree Chart and
- the Family Group Record only; the Preprinted Family
- Group Record margins are another thing altogether.
-
- TYPESETTING: Top Margin
-
- This margin is in inches. Increase it by pressing "D",
- and decrease it by pressing "d".
-
- Note that this applies to the Pedigree Chart and the
- Family Group Record only; the Preprinted Family Group
- Record margin is another thing altogether.
-
- TYPESETTING: Vertical Zoom
-
- This option lets you specify how much of the page you
- want the Pedigree Chart or Family Group Record form to
- take up on your page. Very small values cause the form
- to be scrunched up on the page; very large values cause
- the form to be spread out, possibly spilling over onto a
- second or third page, so be careful.
-
- This option is intended mainly for variations in paper
- size, such as the slightly longer pages that are used in
- Europe and elsewhere. It also allows you more control
- over the size of your bottom margin.
-
- SUBMISSION INFO...
-
- WHAT IS SUBMISSION INFO, AND HOW DOES GIM USE IT?
-
- The term "submission info" refers to your name, address and
- phone.
-
- The submission information is used by:
- - the Pedigree Chart (see Part A)
- - the Family Group Record (See Part B)
- - the Preprinted Family Group Record (See Part C)
- - the Genealogical Folder Exchange (see Chapter 14)
-
- To enter your submission info, enter the Forms Area by
- pressing F3 from the Multi Area.
-
- Then press F7 and answer the questions.
-
- Note that the carriage return, by itself, does NOT clear the
- previous information for a given question. The carriage
- return, by itself, says to leave the information unchanged.
-
- To clear a line press the spacebar followed by the <Enter>
- key.
-
- The submission information asks for your "Stake Name" and
- your "Stake Unit Number". This information is LDS Church
- related. You can safely leave this information blank. Some
- of the forms used to use it, but none of them do anymore.
- The GEDCOM functions will use it if you specify it, but they
- don't require it.
-
- LIMITED FORMS...
-
- WHY AREN'T THERE ANY MORE THAN THESE FORMS?
-
- One of the first things that a genealogist will look for in a
- genealogical software package is the QUALITY and QUANTITY of
- the forms it produces.
-
- We believe that the forms we provide are high QUALITY forms,
- and we hope that they can be customized to fit every need.
-
- But we are also aware that we don't provide a very large
- QUANTITY of forms. Where, you ask, is the wall-sized pedigree
- chart? Why does GIM only support the LDS preprinted form, and
- not, for example, the one produced by Everton Publishers?
-
- Well, we are by no means limited to the forms you see here.
- We're always happy to add forms and other features to GIM at
- the first request. The only reason why there aren't any more
- forms than these is simply this: the GIM Authors have found
- the current set of forms more than adequate for our research
- needs, and GIM's beta testers have not yet requested any
- other forms from us. As soon as we receive a request for an
- additional form, we'll be only too happy to provide support
- for it.
